Since president Obama signed  the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, H.R. 3590, I’ve noticed a significant reduction in national press reports of employer efforts to manage employee health cost and quality. Maybe our prolonged debate ended press interest in successful employer health improvement initiatives? I’d like to suggest now is the exact time to keenly focus upon our own health plans while preparing to fight politically during the governments imposition of HR 3590. Why?

(1) A free lunch still doesn’t exist in the 21st century! HR 3590 encompasses many unfunded elements common-sense tells us cannot be sustained. Guarantee coverage, unlimited benefits and coverage to an additional 33 million members. Insurance companies will be stuck with minimum loss ratios, price controls and mandatory coverage. It’s a recipe for financial disaster. Many believe the formulas are designed to eliminate employer coverage and mandate national plan coverage. Senator Reid stated this week congress will create a national option similar the UK national program, NHS. The attached Telegraph.co.uk article gives an excellent accounting of the definition of a European “free lunch”. http://tinyurl.com/27q7oxg

(2) Hopefully the group public servants who jammed H.R. 3590 through congress will soon become unemployed. If so, one would imagine/hope our new public servants will prevent the healthcare rationing/suffering crashing upon the UK’s subjects from hitting America. It is critical managers of America’s employer sponsored plans start aligning their plan services and benefits with the health and wellness needs of their covered beneficiaries. If so aligned, healthcare trend evaporates and cost reduces. I will discuss some simple steps in future posts.

Because of the sheer number of hours people spend at work, employers are best positioned to advance health care. If employers placed a greater focus on workplace [health] prevention… retirees would enter their Medicare years with few chronic and costly diseases. Think of this as do-it-yourself health care reform…”
